Demo4: Agriculture Atlas of Michigan.

This demo uses AxioMap 1.5. In this version, you can map attributes from several datasets (possibly residing on different servers), compose variables from several datasets, analyze complex queries, bring background map images from multiple ArcIMS or WMS servers.

Click the HELP button in the lower left corner of the map for detailed information about the capabilitis of the software.

Here are some specific features of this demo:

1. Mapping derived variables based on different datasets
Click on an attribute in the left frame, and you will see a choropleth map of this attribute by Michigan counties in the right frame. You can bring in a different set of attributes by selecting it from a pull-down menu above the list of variables. Also, you can click "Compose", and map a derived variable, as a result of some arithmetic operation on two input variables, possibly from different datasets. As before, you can change the number of intervals, and classification method - selecting these parameters under "Options".

2. Composite queries
Click the Query button, and the left frame will expand to show a query dialog. Here is an example of a funny query. Let's find counties which had pumpkin farms in 1992, however, land under pumpkins was zero. With the "Agriculture" dataset active, map the "92 Pumpkin Acres" variable, and build a query [Current var] = 0 . With the "New Set" option, click Evaluate. Click Info, and find that 32 counties are currently selected. Then, select the "92 Pumpkin farms" variable, and evaluate expression[Current var] > 0, selecting from the set. Now, four counties are selected. Click "Listing" (the VML version) to display them as a table.

3. Connecting to remote ArcIMS or WMS servers
Select "Background Image" in te left frame (in the VML version) or choose Options - Image Map Server (in the SVG version) - and you will see a list of remote servers assembled for this map. The servers include ESRI's ArcIMS servers (such as the Census2000 service available from the GeographyNetwork, or the Shaded Relief service available from USGS), WMS servers (such as Microsoft's Terraserver's DRG and DOQ services, or LifeMapper service from www.lifemapper.org), or combinations of them (for example, you map can simultaneously connect to the USGS's Shaded Relief service and GeographyNetwork's airports service). As you select a particular service, zoom or pan, a request is sent to the remote server, and a background map image is generated, along with the legend (opens in a separate window).

4. "Speaking" map (VML version)
Under "Options", check the "Speaking" checkbox. Now, if you have speech plug-in installed, and your speakers are turned on, you can mouse over any map object and hear its name (and attribute value, if you do thematic mapping).

To hear this map "speak" you must have a Speech Plugin installed.
Check the following image to see whether the plugin is installed, or click the image to download it:

The agriculture data for this demo are from the 1992 Agriculture Census, the dataset was assembled by Kathleen Baker, Michigan State University.
